turtle; tortoise

Where it comes from

龟 is a straightforward portrait: a rounded shell seen from the side, a small head peeking out the front, a short tail at the back, and four stubby legs beneath. It is one of the oldest and most literal drawings on the oracle bones — fittingly, since the flat belly-shell of a real tortoise like this one was the very surface Shang diviners heated and cracked to read the future.

A piece of culture

The Black Tortoise of the north
Turtles were treasured for their long lifespans and read as living models of the cosmos: legend held that the turtle's domed shell mirrored the round heavens above, and its flat belly mirrored the square earth below. As 玄武, the Black Tortoise (often shown entwined with a snake), the turtle became one of the Four Symbols guarding the sky's four directions — keeping watch over the north, alongside the Azure Dragon of the east, the Vermilion Bird of the south, and the White Tiger of the west.
