A walled territory with a halberd standing guard inside: a country is land worth defending. The modern simplified form softened the weapon into a treasure — 国 is now jade (玉) inside the walls. Both drawings tell the same truth from different sides: a country is what you protect, and what is precious to you.
A piece of culture
The wall around the kingdom The wall inside 国 became real: for over two thousand years, dynasties built and rebuilt walls along the northern steppe, and the First Emperor linked them into what grew into the Great Wall (长城, "the long wall"). The brick-and-stone wall you can walk today is mostly Ming dynasty work, some 500 years old. It never fully kept invaders out — but as the wall around 中国, the Middle Kingdom you assembled in this chapter, it remains the largest thing humans ever built.
