Where it comes from

The traditional form 餃 is a phono-semantic character. 食, “food”, gives the meaning category, while 交 mainly gives the sound. Simplified 饺 shortens the food side to 饣 and keeps 交. This is not an oracle-bone picture of a dumpling: the character belongs to a later word-building pattern. The seal-form-inspired sketch therefore shows a compact food sign beside the crossing strokes of 交.

A piece of culture

Folded together at the table
饺子 / 餃子 are filled dumplings especially associated with northern Chinese cooking. Many families make and eat them for Lunar New Year, sometimes linking their curved shape with old silver ingots and hopes for prosperity. Fillings, folds and festive customs vary widely, but wrapping dumplings together can turn food preparation into shared family time.
