安

ān · on1

peaceful; safe

Where it comes from

Oracle-bone forms of 安 place 女, a kneeling woman, beneath 宀, a roof or building. The graph is commonly connected with being settled, calm or at rest, but a picture alone cannot recover every ancient idea behind it. This hand-drawn form therefore keeps the attested person-under-a-roof structure without turning it into a claim about where women “belong”.

A piece of culture

Peace you can wish for
安 appears in warm everyday wishes. 晚安 means “good night”, while 平安 means peace, safety and well-being. You may also recognise it in 西安, Xi’an, whose name means “Western Peace”. One small character links a bedtime wish, care for someone’s safety and one of China’s great historic cities.
