Three tiny marks, close together — that is how the scribes first drew smallness itself, like scattered grains of sand. Over time the two outer marks slid down beside a straightened center stroke, giving 小 the shape it still has today: a little hook flanked by two small drops.

The friendliest prefix in Chinese Put 小 in front of almost anything and it turns warm and familiar: a good friend becomes 小王 ("little Wang"), a beloved pet is 小猫 ("little cat"), and Chinese children have called their first school 小学 ("little learning") for over a century. Grandparents use it as an affectionate nickname prefix for children too — 小明, "little Ming" — the same warmth that a diminutive carries in any language.
