A line for the clouds, and drops falling beneath it — rain, drawn exactly as a child would draw it today. Whenever 雨 sits on top of another character, weather is coming: snow (雪), thunder (雷), fog (雾) all shelter under the same cloud-roof.

Asking the sky No question appears more often on the oracle bones than this one: "Will it rain?" For a farming kingdom, rain was life, and the Shang king was the chief rainmaker — he asked the ancestors through the cracking bones, and danced ritual dances in times of drought. Three thousand years later, dragon dances at festivals still echo those rain prayers: the Chinese dragon is not a fire-breather, but a generous water spirit.
