粥

zhōu · zuk1

rice porridge; congee

Where it comes from

粥 is an old character for grain cooked soft in water. The ancient dictionary Shuowen Jiezi analysed 米, “rice or grain”, as the meaning part and 弜 as the sound part. Some early written forms can look like grain between curling strokes, but their exact pictorial interpretation is uncertain. This seal-form-inspired sketch keeps 米 recognisable between two curved sides without claiming a literal ancient picture.

A piece of culture

A warm bowl across many regions
Congee appears in many regional Chinese food traditions, from a simple breakfast to a gentle meal when someone is unwell. Its thickness, grains and toppings vary widely by family and region. In Cantonese, 粥 is zuk1; a plain bowl is 白粥 (baak6 zuk1), often served with small savoury side dishes.
